Weight Loss Drugs for Cats? Scientists Are Testing It
Could the same drugs helping people lose weight soon help overweight cats too? Two biotech companies are trying to find out. They’re testing early versions of GLP-1 drugs, the same type used in popular human weight-loss treatments to see if they can work safely in cats.
One company is working with a university to study a weekly injection. Another is testing something different: a small implant that a vet places under the skin, which slowly releases medicine for six months. Right now, though, no GLP-1 drug for cats is available to buy. These are still just tests.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone that controls hunger and blood sugar. In humans, this helps treat obesity and type 2 diabetes. Scientists now want to know if the same idea works in cats. Every animal’s body handles medicine differently, so researchers can’t just assume a human drug is safe for pets. It has to be tested separately.
Cat obesity is a real problem. According to a national pet obesity group, 61 out of every 100 cats checked were overweight. That extra weight can shorten a cat’s life and hurt their joints. Making it harder, many cats don’t like new foods and won’t take pills easily.
The university study will follow about 70 overweight cats for three months. The implant study needs a licensed vet to place the device. Both companies hope to share early results later this year. Before any drug can be sold, it will need approval going through the same kind of safety checks as other pet medicines.
Experts are cautious. Just because these drugs became huge for humans doesn’t mean the same will happen for pets. Most people pay for their pet’s vet care out of their own pocket; there’s no widespread pet health insurance covering it. So cost could be the biggest hurdle. Many experts think growth will come first from special prescription pet foods, not drugs.
At the same time, big pet food companies are focusing on prevention instead of treatment. One major company grew its lineup of foods aimed at gut health and helping cats live longer, saying certain foods can extend a healthy cat’s life. Animal health companies are also expanding into new tests and treatments.
Spending on pet food is expected to hit around $65 billion this year. The whole pet industry food, vet care, products could grow past $240 billion in the next four years. All of this shows a bigger trend: pet care is becoming more like human healthcare, mixing nutrition with medicine. Whether these new cat drugs succeed will really come down to two things: are they safe, and can regular pet owners actually afford them?
