Vivani’s Semaglutide Implant Aims to Solve GLP-1 Treatment Discontinuation

The proposed model sees the implant as a maintenance option instead of a first-line treatment. Patients need to reach a stable semaglutide dose through regular injections or oral tablets. After that, doctors can switch eligible patients to the implant for consistent treatment. Developers suggest that dosing might happen just once or twice a year.
The device includes a small titanium reservoir designed to hold a specific dose of semaglutide. A special membrane lets the drug flow out through tiny channels at a controlled pace. Vivani claims this steady release reduces the sharp spikes and drops seen with traditional dosing. Additionally, different implant strengths will provide doctors with vital options during patient selection.
Serious clinical and regulatory challenges still exist before the device can hit the market. The implant needs to go through strict clinical trials and gain approval from the Food and Drug Administration. At the same time, doctors show cautious interest but stress the importance of comparative effectiveness data. Healthcare providers also need to figure out how to include implantation in standard obesity care.
Uncertain cost structures and insurance coverage complicate commercial forecasts. These unknowns cloud the implant’s potential share of a fast-growing global pharmaceutical market. Novo Nordisk views this external partnership as a valuable addition to its internal development efforts.
