CVS Pharmacy Expands GLP-1 Support to Improve Access and Treatment Continuity
CVS Health has announced a broader plan to support patients on GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy across its retail pharmacy and clinical care networks. This initiative includes over 9,000 CVS Pharmacy locations and MinuteClinic, which operates in nearly all states. The program aims to tackle three ongoing challenges to GLP-1 treatment: cost, access to care, and managing side effects.
Starting July 1, 2026, CVS Pharmacy will join the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program. Medicare beneficiaries who qualify can access certain GLP-1 medications for $50 each month until December 31, 2027. This federal program seeks to stabilize out-of-pocket costs for beneficiaries who depend on these medications for type 2 diabetes or obesity management.
For patients not eligible for Medicare, CVS Pharmacy accepts manufacturer coupons, vouchers, and third-party discount cards. Patients with commercial insurance using a manufacturer coupon might pay as little as $25 a month for eligible medications. Uninsured patients using a manufacturer voucher may pay $149 a month for qualifying doses. CVS Pharmacy also collaborates with NovoCare, the manufacturer assistance program that provides discounted access to Wegovy and Ozempic.
Pharmacist-led support is key to the strategy. Internal company survey data shows that nearly half of consumers prefer personalized, in-person pharmacy interactions over digital-only communication when managing chronic therapies. CVS pharmacists offer dosing guidance, side effect counseling, and ongoing monitoring support, working alongside prescribing clinicians instead of independently altering therapy.
MinuteClinic is launching a virtual care option for patients needing clinical evaluation before starting therapy. For $49 per visit, with no ongoing membership fee, eligible adults can consult a licensed physician associate or nurse practitioner via a video call. The clinician reviews the patient’s medical history and weight-management goals to decide if GLP-1 therapy is a suitable choice. Patients must handle any necessary lab tests separately.
This virtual service is available in 47 states and Washington, D.C., for self-pay adults aged 18 to 64 who are overweight or have obesity. Patients starting treatment can arrange follow-up virtual visits for dose adjustments, side effect management, and ongoing monitoring. All GLP-1 medications dispensed through this service are prescription-only and follow standard FDA labeling rules.
Side effects, especially gastrointestinal issues like nausea, are often cited as reasons patients stop GLP-1 therapy early. To help with this, CVS Pharmacy has expanded its over-the-counter product range, including items that support hydration, protein intake, and digestive comfort. Some locations have dedicated displays created with the consumer health company Haleon, pairing pharmacist advice with easy-to-reach product options.
Clinically, GLP-1 receptor agonists work by mimicking incretin hormones that control insulin secretion, delay gastric emptying, and increase feelings of fullness. The FDA has approved certain formulations for managing type 2 diabetes and, separately, for chronic weight management in patients with specific body mass index criteria. Clinicians make prescribing decisions based on their judgment and FDA-approved guidelines.
As of March 31, 2026, CVS Health reported around 9,000 retail pharmacy locations and over 1,000 walk-in clinics, along with a pharmacy benefits management business serving about 88 million plan members. The company’s expanded GLP-1 initiative is part of a larger industry effort to improve access to these medications as demand rises nationwide. Maintaining therapy adherence, supported by financial help and clinical guidance, remains a top priority for payers and pharmacy networks managing this growing patient population.
