Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly Weight-Loss Pill Performance

Novo Nordisk recently announced that its oral semaglutide pill achieved superior weight loss results. This data comes from late-stage clinical trials comparing the medication to orforglipron. To be precise, both companies are racing to meet the high demand for needle-free medications. In light of this, the pharmaceutical industry is shifting toward more convenient oral options. These daily pills offer a new way to manage chronic metabolic health conditions.

The FDA approved oral semaglutide for obesity treatment on December 22, 2025. This medication is the first oral GLP-1 receptor agonist to receive such a high level of authorization. During the OASIS 4 trial, participants taking a 25 mg dose lost 13.6% of their body weight. Furthermore, a specific protocol analysis showed that weight reduction reached 16.6% after 64 weeks of use. In view of this, the pill performs similarly to the popular injectable version.

Eli Lilly shared positive results from the Phase III ATTAIN-1 trial regarding its candidate, orforglipron. Participants using the highest 36 mg dose lost an average of 27.3 pounds over 72 weeks. To be precise, this result represents a 12.4% reduction in total body weight for those individuals. Along with this, nearly 60% of the patients achieved a weight loss of at least 10%. For this reason, the drug met all primary goals despite trailing its main competitor.

The chemical structures of these two molecules lead to very different daily requirements for patients. Semaglutide is a peptide that requires special enhancers to pass through the stomach lining. For this reason, patients must take the pill on an empty stomach with very little water. Furthermore, they must wait 30 minutes before consuming any food or other medications. In view of this, the administration process requires a high level of discipline from the user.

Orforglipron is a small-molecule drug that does not have strict dietary or timing restrictions. Patients can take this medication at any time of day, regardless of their meal schedule. To be precise, the chemical design allows for easier manufacturing and much larger production scales. Along with this, the convenience of the drug might be more important to some patients. In light of this, orforglipron offers a flexible alternative for those with busy lifestyles.

Novo Nordisk launched the oral version of its weight loss medication in early January 2026. The 1.5 mg starter dose currently costs $149 monthly under a special federal arrangement. To be precise, the price for the 4 mg dose will remain the same until April 15. Furthermore, the highest maintenance doses of 9 mg and 25 mg are priced at $299 monthly. In view of this, manufacturer savings programs may lower the cost to $25 for insured patients.

Eli Lilly filed a New Drug Application for orforglipron after completing six successful Phase III studies. The ATTAIN-MAINTAIN trial proved that patients can switch from injectables to this pill without gaining weight. Specifically, those who transitioned to the pill showed almost no change in weight after 24 weeks. Along with this, the placebo group gained significant weight during the same period. For this reason, experts expect the drug to receive official regulatory approval very soon.

Analysts suggest that oral medications will capture 24% of the weight loss market by 2030. This shift could generate approximately $22 billion in annual sales for the pharmaceutical industry. To be precise, orforglipron might command 60% of the oral segment due to its simple dosing. Furthermore, oral options may improve long-term adherence by removing the fear of needles. In light of this, the market for daily pills will likely see rapid growth.

The FDA also approved oral semaglutide to reduce the risk of major heart-related events. This includes protection against heart attacks and strokes for adults with obesity and heart disease. To be precise, the clinical data mirrors the results found in the earlier SELECT trial. Along with this, the medication carries an expanded indication for patients with type 2 diabetes. In view of this, the pill provides significant health benefits beyond simple weight reduction.
