Obesity Drug Battle Heats Up as Hims & Hers Debuts Wegovy Rival

Hims & Hers has launched a compounded version of Novo Nordisk’s new Wegovy pill. The move intensifies competition in the booming weight loss drug market. This telehealth company now offers a cheaper alternative to Novo’s branded treatment, which immediately drew criticism from the Danish drugmaker.

Hims & Hers said it will sell the oral semaglutide product at a starting price of $49 for the first month. The company plans to raise the price to $99 per month under a longer subscription plan. This comes at a time when Novo Nordisk recently introduced its branded oral Wegovy at a significantly higher price point. Analysts say the pricing gap could attract cost-conscious patients.

The new pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in Wegovy. Semaglutide belongs to the GLP 1 class of drugs, which helps regulate appetite and blood sugar levels. They have transformed obesity treatment over the past few years, due to which demand for GLP-1 therapies continues to surge worldwide.

Hims & Hers said its compounded pill uses a liposome based delivery system and claims this technology improves absorption of the active ingredient. It also said healthcare providers can tailor doses to individual patient needs. The product is available through its telehealth platform after an online consultation.

Novo Nordisk strongly opposes the launch. The company argues that Hims & Hers is engaging in unlawful mass compounding. Novo insists it is the only manufacturer with FDA approval for oral semaglutide for weight loss, and they will pursue legal and regulatory action. Novo also warned that compounded products may pose safety risks.

Compounding pharmacies can legally produce customized medicines under certain conditions. They often step in when approved drugs face shortages. However, regulators draw a clear line between customization and mass production. Novo claims Hims & Hers has crossed that line. The dispute could test the boundaries of compounding rules.

The US Food and Drug Administration has previously raised concerns about compounded GLP 1 products. Regulators warned that unapproved versions do not undergo the same rigorous testing as branded drugs. Clinical trials establish safety, efficacy, and consistent manufacturing standards. Compounded drugs typically bypass that process. This difference remains central to the current debate.

Investors reacted quickly to the news. Shares of Novo Nordisk fell after the announcement. Eli Lilly, another major player in obesity drugs, also saw stock volatility. Market observers said cheaper alternatives could pressure profit margins. The weight loss drug market now faces intensifying price competition.

Hims & Hers continues to expand beyond its original focus areas. The company built its brand around telehealth services for hair loss and sexual health. It later moved into mental health and dermatology. Weight loss treatments represent one of its fastest growing segments. GLP 1 drugs have become a major revenue driver.

Novo Nordisk has invested heavily in obesity research for decades. Wegovy has become one of its most important products. The injectable version generated billions in global sales. The company recently introduced an oral version to expand access. Novo sees the pill as a strategic extension of its franchise.

The broader obesity market keeps evolving. More companies are developing oral GLP 1 therapies. Patients often prefer pills over injections. Convenience and lower prices can influence treatment choices. Insurers also weigh cost considerations when deciding coverage policies.

Hims & Hers positions its offering as a more affordable option. The company argues that high drug prices limit patient access, and telehealth can reduce barriers and streamline care. Critics counter that lower prices should not compromise safety standards. The legal battle may shape how far telehealth firms can go.

Healthcare experts say patients should understand the difference between approved and compounded drugs. Approved medicines undergo extensive clinical testing. Regulators inspect manufacturing facilities for quality control. Compounded drugs rely on pharmacy level oversight. The standards differ in important ways.

Novo Nordisk maintains that patient safety remains its top priority. The company says it will defend its intellectual property and regulatory exclusivity. Hims & Hers insists it operates within existing compounding rules. Both sides appear prepared for a prolonged dispute.

The controversy highlights tension between innovation and regulation. Telehealth platforms move quickly to meet consumer demand. Large pharmaceutical companies rely on patents and approvals to protect investments. Policymakers must balance access, affordability, and safety. The outcome could influence future obesity treatments.

Demand for weight loss drugs shows no sign of slowing. Obesity rates remain high worldwide, and physicians increasingly view GLP 1 drugs as long-term treatments. Competition may expand options for patients and may also reshape pricing strategies across the sector.

For now, Hims & Hers has entered the oral GLP 1 race with an aggressive price strategy. Novo Nordisk has responded with firm legal warnings and regulators may soon face pressure to clarify compounding boundaries. Patients and investors will watch closely, as this fight over Wegovy’s pill form marks a new chapter in the obesity drug boom.
