Reproductive medicine is also a key focus. This broad interest reflects genuine biological logic. Nevertheless, the actual evidence varies greatly across these fields.
GLP-1 is a vital gut hormone. It triggers insulin release and tells the brain you are full. Pharmaceutical versions mimic this exact biological action. Notably, GLP-1 receptors exist far beyond the gut. They are found in the heart, kidneys, and liver. The human brain also contains these vital receptors. Therefore, scientists have a clear reason to explore wider uses.
Heart and liver benefits show the strongest evidence so far. A large trial included over 17,000 participants. It showed semaglutide reduced major heart events by 20 percent. This impressive result included heart attacks and strokes. Notably, this occurred even in patients without diabetes. Another trial tested nearly 1,200 patients. Here, semaglutide easily outperformed a placebo for advanced liver disease. Furthermore, tirzepatide significantly reduces severe sleep apnea. It achieves this mainly by reducing airway obstruction.
Lowering cancer risk has gained massive attention recently. One study tracked 86,000 adults with obesity. It found users had a 17 percent lower cancer risk. Along with this, emerging data shows slower metastatic spread. The drugs have very strong anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, they might fight cancer independently of weight loss. Nevertheless, controlled trials have not confirmed a direct prevention mechanism.

The risk increased by more than two times. Rapid weight loss also cuts essential lean muscle mass. Accordingly, this poses a major concern for older adults. Evidence regarding thyroid cancer risk remains highly conflicting. The drug labeling still carries a strict precautionary warning.
Most emerging applications lack rigorous controlled clinical trials. Major studies mainly enrolled patients with obesity or diabetes. They largely excluded people with psychiatric or addiction conditions. In light of this, a massive evidence gap exists today. This gap sits exactly where clinical interest is strongest. Long-term safety data remains quite limited overall. The groups receiving off-label prescriptions face the highest medical uncertainty.
