Structure Therapeutics’ Oral GLP-1 Candidate Aleniglipron Posts 16.2% Weight Loss in Phase 2 Trial

Structure Therapeutics just shared exciting new results from a mid-stage clinical trial for its experimental weight loss pill, aleniglipron. Company researchers presented these major updates at the recent American Diabetes Association annual meeting. The daily pill helped patients lose up to 15.3% of their body weight after 36 weeks of treatment. Amazingly, the data showed that patients were still shedding pounds without hitting a weight loss wall.

These strong results suggest that aleniglipron could become a major competitor in the fast-growing market for oral obesity drugs. Because of this, industry experts are already comparing the pill to current heavyweights and other drugs still in development. People who chose to stay in the extended part of the study saw impressive success. To be exact, groups taking different strengths of the pill lost 13.3%, 16.2%, and 15.3% of their weight.

These numbers match up with the 45 mg, 90 mg, and 120 mg daily doses. Patients achieved this extra progress after following the routine for an average of 20 additional weeks. Looking at the big picture across both parts of the trial, average weight loss hovered around 15%. Notably, these numbers hold up incredibly well against other high-profile obesity treatments currently making headlines.

For comparison, a rival pill from Eli Lilly called orforglipron showed a 12.4% weight loss in its own main study. Meanwhile, Lilly’s medium 36 mg dose hit a 14.2% weight loss mark during its earlier testing phases. This means aleniglipron is performing right in the same neighborhood as its biggest upcoming competitor. Stock market analysts from William Blair shared their own optimistic views on these developments in a note to investors.

The analysts mentioned that aleniglipron could easily become a go-to alternative to existing brand-name treatments if final trials succeed. However, they also warned that comparing two different medical trials directly can often lead to misleading conclusions. The researchers introduced the higher doses later in this specific study, which changes how we view the timeline. Building on this, the extended study data still needs more formal math and statistical mapping to be fully complete.

Therefore, it is simply too early to crown a definitive winner between these two competing weight loss options. When it comes to side effects, Structure Therapeutics is using a very slow and steady approach to raising doses. The analysts described this strategy as a smart way to help patients adjust to the medication comfortably. This method aims to protect patients from severe stomach issues, which are a notorious downside of these types of drugs.

Stomach upset and nausea are common complaints for anyone taking modern GLP-1 medications. To prove its safety further, the company plans to start its final phase 3 trials by the third quarter of 2025. In light of this, the medical community expects to see much clearer data on how this drug stands out soon. Nevertheless, independent experts cannot say for sure yet whether this pill will officially become the best option on the market.

Beyond this single drug, the company is working hard on a whole family of oral treatments for metabolic health. These new pipeline projects aim to treat several different conditions without requiring any needles. For example, their leading experimental compound for blood sugar control is already moving through initial safety tests. Along with this, a larger study tracking higher doses is scheduled to kick off next quarter.

A second backup compound is also scheduled to enter official human trials by the end of 2025. Analysts pointed out that the global demand for simpler weight loss options represents a massive financial opportunity. Standard injectable drugs face massive shipping, storage, and pricing hurdles in many parts of the world.

Given this reality, the success of aleniglipron matters for reasons far beyond corporate profits or stock market competition. A successful pill could genuinely change public health options for communities that lack expensive medical infrastructure.
